This weekend marked a major step forward in the fight for reproductive freedom. Idaho Democratic Party leaders from across the state officially endorsed the Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act, a citizen-led initiative that will give Idahoans the power to take back control over their most personal healthcare decisions.

This initiative is being led by Idahoans United for Women & Families, a nonpartisan coalition of everyday Idahoans working to protect the well-being of women, children, and families across our state.

Idaho’s current abortion laws are cruel, dangerous, and out of touch with what most Idahoans want for their families. These laws offer no exceptions for the health or fertility of the mother and threaten doctors with prison for providing care. The consequences are heartbreaking: women denied critical treatment, families forced to flee the state for urgent care, and Idaho now ranked dead last in the nation for access to maternal health providers.

Democrats in Idaho have fought tirelessly against these extreme bans, introducing bills to restore health care access, protect doctors, and keep private family decisions free from government interference. But Republican politicians have blocked every effort.

Now, Idahoans have the power to act. The Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act would restore reasonable access to abortion health care, protect access to birth control and fertility treatments like IVF, and ensure that deeply personal medical decisions remain private between women, their families, and their doctors, not dictated by politicians.

To get this initiative on the 2026 ballot, we need thousands of Idahoans to sign the petition. If you haven’t signed yet, make a plan to do so today and ask someone you know to join you. Every signature brings us closer to restoring reproductive freedom. You can also volunteer to gather signatures or host a signing event in your community so even more Idahoans have the chance to make their voices heard.

Passing this initiative will be a historic victory for reproductive freedom, but protecting it will require electing leaders who respect the will of the voters. Without leadership committed to defending the voices of Idahoans, the same politicians who created this crisis will try to overturn the progress Idahoans fought for. In 2026, we must elect Democrats up and down the ballot to make sure the voices of Idahoans are heard and respected.

This fight is about who makes the most personal, life-changing decisions for Idaho families: you and your doctor, or politicians.

Let’s stand together, take action, and build a future where privacy and freedom are protected for every Idahoan.

With gratitude and determination,

Lauren Necochea
