On the 61st Anniversary of the Wilderness Act, Idaho Democratic Party Chair Lauren Necochea released the following statement:

“America’s wild places were safeguarded because Democrats led the way. The Wilderness Act, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, stands as one of our nation’s greatest conservation victories that remains vital today. Idaho Senator Frank Church championed the legislation, carrying our voice to Congress and setting a national standard in protecting land for the people.

“Frank Church fought to ensure every American could experience the freedom and beauty of unspoiled mountains, rivers, and forests. From the Selway-Bitterroot to wilderness areas across the country, his leadership has given our nation a lasting gift that still defines us.

“That leadership is missing from Republicans in power today, as they side with special interests intent on selling off, exploiting, or blocking access to our public lands. Idaho Democrats reject those threats. Wilderness belongs to the people, and protecting it is our duty to future generations.

“On this anniversary, we honor Idaho’s role in passing the Wilderness Act and recommit ourselves to upholding that legacy. Just as Frank Church once led the nation, Idaho Democrats will always fight to keep our wild places public, protected, and open to all.”
