Idaho Democratic Party Chair Lauren Necochea released the following statement on the U.S. Senate’s shutdown vote:

“Throughout the shutdown, Democrats have fought to keep government working for the people it serves, not the wealthy few who can buy influence. Meanwhile, Republicans sought to deepen the hardship faced by working families, hoping to pressure Democrats into accepting a deal that eased some pain but failed to fix the damage they created.

“We must remember who caused this economic crisis. The Republican Party betrayed the American people. They pushed through tax breaks for billionaires and then let health coverage credits expire, leaving Idaho families with premiums that doubled overnight. They allowed Donald Trump and his allies to illegally fire federal workers and cut off food aid, driving our economy into a ditch and taking meals away from Idaho children.

“I applaud the overwhelming majority of Senate Democrats who stood firm and refused to endorse a deal that rewards the wealthy while gutting health care for working families. Now the country will see the real impact of the Republican agenda: higher costs, fewer protections, and more working families left to struggle while the powerful come out ahead.”
